“We live in a society absolutely dependent on science and technology and yet we have cleverly arranged things so that hardly anyone understands science and technology. This is a clear prescription for disaster.” – Carl Sagan’s philosophy seems to offer a confused view of what science is. For example, idealists, empiricists, kuhnians, popperians, positivists, analytics, postmodernists and others all have different views. The next Port Macquarie Philosophy Forum will be held on Sunday, October 31 between 4:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. at the CWA Rooms on Town Green in Port Macquarie. The guest speaker will be David Smith, a graduate in electrical engineering from the University of London. Much of his career has been spent solving computer problems. He began to study philosophy informally in 2007 and began to present courses at Port Macquarie-Hastings U3A on philosophy and several other subjects in 2012. He was particularly interested in the place of science in our society. and how it has been undermined by special interests. This, he believes, is now causing great harm. Dave and his wife Carol moved to Port Macquarie from Sydney in 2011 and they are two of the four founders and organizers of the Port Macquarie Philosophy Forum. This lecture will cover the ideas of Sir Karl Popper, as they come closest to Dave’s understanding of what science is, as it relates to his own scientific studies.
